The question is not trivial. If 10 years ago the competition between major CCTV camera manufacturers was directly related to the technologies and characteristics of CCD, today there is a rivalry between digital signal processors – DSP (Digital Signal Processor). They are designed to process digital signals in real time. There are not so many manufacturers of DSP for CCTV cameras in the world. One of the leaders in this field is Samsung Techwin (South Korea). The processors produced by this company are distributed all over the world and are used by numerous manufacturers of security cameras.

DSP
DSP is the brain of a modern camera (both analog and digital). The use of digital signal processors in the circuitry of modern analog cameras has allowed not only to improve the quality of the formed image (increase clarity, sensitivity and dynamic budget), but also to implement a range of additional functions, taking into account the specifics of the industry. OSD menu, image inversion, image masking zones, titles, remote camera control interface, digital zoom — this is far from a complete list of functions provided by DSP.
With each generation, processors become more powerful and the characteristics of CCTV cameras improve, new functions appear. Today, the CCTV camera market is dominated by cameras created on the basis of 3rd and 4th generation processors. The horizontal resolution of the image formed by such cameras reaches 520-560 TVL. A wide dynamic range algorithm with a budget of 90-120 dB has been implemented. The limit of sensitivity increase has been reached — 128-256 times in the charge integration mode.
And here is a new step – Samsung Techwin releases a new generation processor W5 and launches production of a new series of TV cameras.

DSP – W5 Samsung Techwin
The 5th generation W5 processor has increased the resolution of the analog camera to values ​​close to the theoretical maximum – 600 TVL in color and 700 TVL in black and white. In addition, the W5 DSP provides color reproduction in a wide range of color temperatures – from 1700 K to 11,000 K.
Another important feature is the implementation of the Coaxitron protocol for controlling and configuring the camera via a coaxial cable, which simplifies the process of programming and servicing the camera and reduces the cost of installation. The protocol is supported by a number of CCTV equipment manufacturers (such as Pelco, Mitsubishi, Dedicated Micros, etc.), which ensures the compatibility of Samsung Techwin cameras. The distance of the camera from the recorder or switch with Coaxitron support is 400 m (RG6U).
By increasing the amount of RAM and ROM of the DSP in the W5 processor, the implementation of such a function as SSNR (image noise reduction technology) has been improved. SSNRIII technology uses 2D and 3D filters depending on the shooting scene, which allows to increase the efficiency of eliminating the noise component in the image, increase the sensitivity of the camera and the signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, it was possible to achieve the limit of increasing sensitivity — 512 times. The efficiency of SSNRIII allows to significantly reduce the consumption of disk space of the digital video recorder (up to 70%) by reducing the parasitic data flow of noise.

The W5 processor has enabled the implementation of a new dynamic range enhancement technology – SSDR (Samsung Signal Noise Reduction). SSDR ensures the formation of a high-quality image in high-contrast lighting conditions.
Thanks to the new processor, a number of functions used in the 4th generation W4 and SV4 Samsung Techwin processors have been improved.
We are talking about HLC – the peak brightness compensation function. HLC ensures the inversion of peak brightness in the image. Bright light sources, such as car headlights, are inverted into low-brightness light spots, which allows you to see the license plate of a car entering a parking lot.
Another improved function is the video motion detector. Now in cameras with the W5 processor, 8 polygonal zones with different sensitivity are available for adjustment. The number of masking zones allows you to hide private zones from the operator's eyes has grown to 12.
Finally, the on-screen camera settings menu is now available in 14 languages, including Russian.

Cameras with the W5 processor
Samsung Techwin currently produces 5 cameras with the W5 processor. These models are highly appreciated by experts. This is the SDC-435 of a standard design without a lens. Two outdoor models with built-in lens SOC-4160 and SIR-4160 and two all-weather vandal-proof cameras – SIR-4260 and SD-4700. But the number of cameras is growing, and by the end of the year integrated dome cameras with the 5th generation processor – W5 will appear.
