“I am the head of the security service of a chain of retail stores. My task is not just to provide video surveillance for individual objects, but also to build a distributed video system with an archive depth of at least 6 months, completely secure data storage and the ability to remotely access the archive,” says Valery Neklyuev, Moscow. Sergey PIGOREV, Director of the Poliset-SB Group of Companies, answers the reader's question.
First, you need to understand the features of each of the points in this question. It is physically impossible to store an archive 6 months deep on the hard drives of a video recorder at maximum quality settings. This is due to the fact that no more than 4 disks can be installed in the case of the recorder itself. At the same time, the total volume of the disks will not exceed 8 TB, therefore, the maximum archive depth will be only 1.5-2 months. This means that it is necessary to have storage outside the case of the video recorder. This became possible when using recorders with NAS archive support. NAS is a network storage system, usually consisting of a special device or a separate computer with a disk array connected to it. Let's see what advantages this technology provides. Now the archive depth is limited only by the size of the disk array connected to the NAS device, and the size of the disk array, in turn, is limited only by the financial capabilities of the customer. As a result, there is no need to install large disks in the recorder case, just 80 GB is enough. The recorder will send recorded data to the network storage at certain intervals (10-60 minutes), and store only a small period of time on the built-in disk. Using such a structure automatically includes the second and third points of the technical task. Let's consider these issues in more detail. Most NAS systems are built on the basis of the Linux operating system, so they have very serious protection against unauthorized access. NAS is a network storage that can be physically located anywhere in the world. At the same time, the storage is closed in a safe under reliable protection, unlike a recorder, which can simply be stolen or destroyed as a result of a fire or other natural disasters. You can also access the archive from anywhere in the world, and you no longer need to connect to each recorder separately, but it is enough to have a connection to the NAS device to view the archives of all recorders connected to our network.
