Reducing losses in trading

Reducing Losses in Trade One of the most effective means of attracting customers in retail is openly available goods. It has been proven that in a store with openly available goods, a person spends more than in a store where the goods are sold by a salesperson standing behind the counter. However, there is another side to the coin — theft. They steal goods of completely different purposes and price categories: from a bar of chocolate to expensive cognacs, depending on the social status of the thief.
Who steals?
Among the shop visitors who steal, two types can be conventionally distinguished: “amateurs” (93%) and “professionals” (7%). “Amateurs” steal spontaneously, clumsily, “for nothing better to do” and for the thrill of it. The principle applies to them: if there is an opportunity to steal and the risk is low, be sure to try. The “amateurs” category may include people from different social groups by status and income level.
Thefts by visitors account for the largest share of all enterprise losses and amount to 64%, the share of theft by employees accounts for about 30% of losses and no more than 6% are losses associated with supplier errors, accounting errors, etc.

How much do visitors steal?
In a supermarket with an area of up to 1,500 m2, on average, at least three people are caught stealing per day. And how many thefts remain undetected? Inexorable statistics have an answer: for every detected theft, there are on average 46 undetected. It turns out that 141 customers steal something per day. And each of them (again, according to statistics) takes away an average of 3.7 units of goods. A total of 521.7 units of goods per day.
How to solve the problem of theft?
Foreign and Russian experience has shown that the best way to solve the problem of shoplifting is to install special electronic equipment – anti-theft systems. Nowadays, no Western self-service store opens without anti-theft systems.
All over the world, in supermarkets and department stores, boutiques and pharmacies, anti-theft systems based on radio frequency technology are the most popular. They are the most effective, inexpensive, reliable and safe.
How effective is an anti-theft system?
Let's try to calculate the effectiveness of an anti-theft system.
When calculating the payback period of anti-theft protection systems, the following initial data must be taken into account: the number of cash registers, the daily turnover of the store, losses from customer theft, the cost of the anti-theft protection system, the installation option of the system.
For clarity, let's calculate the payback period for installing an anti-theft system for an average supermarket with an area of up to 1,500 m2, with three cash registers. The cost of the equipment will be 105,000 rubles. Let's assume that the store's turnover per day is 140,000 rubles, while the total losses for one day are 0.8% or 1,120 rubles. When installing an anti-theft system, theft by customers, taking into account professional thieves, is reduced by approximately 60% or 672.00 rubles.
If the store operates 365 days a year, then the total losses of the store per year are 408,800 rubles, and when installing an anti-theft system, this amount is reduced by 245,280.00 rubles. Thus, installing three systems at all cash registers will pay for itself in about 5 months.
Of course, this calculation is quite approximate. For example, if the store's turnover is higher and the number of cash registers is smaller, then the payback period will be significantly reduced.
Which anti-theft system should you choose?
Also, the key point in calculating the payback period is the protection system itself — and it is necessary to take into account not only the cost of the anti-theft antenna, but also the technical characteristics (the lower the percentage of system response, the greater the losses and, accordingly, the longer the payback period), the cost of consumables and service. At the same time, there is no need to rush to expensive models of radio frequency technology from foreign manufacturers, all other characteristics being equal, they have unnecessary functionality that is practically not used in the process of work, but significantly increases the payback period.
