«How can you organize a video surveillance system with delimitation of powers using digital video recorders? –
Alexey REDKIN, Moscow.»

Dmitry Streltsov, regional manager of Mitsubishi Electric (Russia and CIS countries), answers the reader's question.

It is known that computer systems can be quite flexibly configured to differentiate user rights. But what to do in cases of using
Stand Alone recorders, which are essentially a closed device and are used primarily in places where it is difficult to provide constant equipment maintenance, so to speak, according to the principle: «set and forget»?
The first option is to use remote programs for monitoring and control. Thus, the recorder will continue to record information from CCTV cameras, and users will be able to access it to receive a «live» picture and information previously recorded remotely over the network. In this case, connection problems, software errors, and simply inept user handling of the software will not lead to critical problems in the operation of the recorder. In this case, user rights can be divided at the software level. But depending on the quality of the network (in the case of its low bandwidth), images from the cameras will arrive with a delay or be of worse quality.
An alternative method for dividing user rights can be the dual multiplexer function, which has been on the market since recently. The essence is that two multiplexers are «sewn into» the recorder. Thus, when connecting two monitors and two keyboards, two independent workstations are organized. This scheme allows you to get an ideal picture without distortions on the monitor and divide the cameras by functional purpose. For example, one recorder in a video surveillance system can be used by security (cameras at the entrance, perimeter, etc.) directly to ensure security, another — by the administration (cameras in the corridors, in the «smoking rooms», etc.) to solve organizational issues. At the same time, a number of cameras can have a dual function, but a dual multiplexer will allow you to show the image from these cameras on two monitors simultaneously. In this case, the delimitation of rights occurs at the hardware level.
