Question and Answer

«Tell me, are there smoke detectors that respond to cigarette smoke with a separate message, so as not to receive a fire signal on the central device, but to find out that someone is smoking in the room? — Nikolay PERMINOV, St. Petersburg»

Roman POLESHCHUK, Product Manager for Bosch Security Systems, answers the reader's question

Personally, I have not encountered such detectors in my practice. Here, first of all, it is necessary to define the task. If the goal is to detect smoking in premises where it is prohibited, and at the same time the warning system should not be activated without the occurrence of a real fire, then the solution is as follows. It is necessary to program the fire panel for semi-automatic activation of the warning system, i.e., when the fire alarm is confirmed by the operator. In this case, the operator will have some time to check whether the cause of this alarm is really a fire. The downside of this solution is an increase in the response time of the warning system to a fire alarm.
Another, more complex option may be to install two detectors in the room: one smoke detector to detect smoking; and the second, which does not react to cigarette smoke, to detect a fire. In this case, the first smoke detector should trigger a technical alarm signal, in your case, about smoking. Some modern addressable analogue systems can be programmed in this way. A second detector that does not react to smoking can be used to detect a fire. For example, a combined smoke/gas detector or a dual-channel optical smoke detector with DualRay technology with an infrared and blue LED.
Dual-channel optical smoke detectors operate on the same principle of scattered light as conventional optical detectors. But due to the different wavelengths of the IR and blue LEDs, such detectors can determine the size of smoke particles and, therefore, distinguish a real fire from cigarette smoke. Combined smoke/gas detectors distinguish cigarette smoke by the signal level in the gas detection channel. When smoking, unlike a real fire, an extremely small amount of carbon monoxide (CO) is released, insufficient to activate a fire alarm. Surely, you can come up with other technical solutions for your problem, but do not forget about organizational measures.
