KNX has gone international.

KNX has become an international standard: ISO/IEC 14543-3

KNX is a globally recognized INTERNATIONAL STANDARD for home networks and building management.

KNX has already proven its compliance with the requirements of both European standards CENELEC EN50090 and CEN EN 13321-1, and its recent recognition as an international standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3) has only confirmed the importance of KNX in the world.

KNX emerged in the early 90s through the joint efforts of the Batibus, EIB and EHS organizations.

At that time, no one could predict how the future will turn out.

These three major European organizations initially developed their solutions in the field of home automation and building management separately from each other and tried to find their place in European standardization.

Batibus, for example, was successful in countries such as France, Italy and Spain, while EIB was more popular in German-speaking and northern European countries.

Manufacturers of kitchen appliances and home electronics generally preferred EHS solutions.

In 1997, these three organizations decided to join forces in conquering the market for intelligent buildings and to combine their developments into a single international industrial standard.

The KNX specifications were introduced in the spring of 2002 by a new organization, the KNX Association (Belgium).

They were based on the EIB specifications, extended by new configuration mechanisms and by the data transmission media originally developed by Batibus and EHS.

In December 2003, the KNX protocol and the two transmission media (twisted pair and Powerline) were recognized by the national committees of Europe and ratified by the European standardization organization CENELEC Bureau Technique as the European standard EN 50090.

The KNX RF (Radio Frequency) transmission medium was recognized in May 2006.

Since the KNX specifications are increasingly used not only for the automation of electrical installations but also for automation in the HVAC field, the KNX Association (Belgium) proposed to CEN to adopt the specifications also as a European standard for control systems in the field of building automation.

The CEN TC 247 committee accepted the proposal and the EN 13321-1 standard was published shortly after.

In view of the high demand for widely accepted and compatible KNX products and technologies outside Europe, the KNX Association created all the necessary prerequisites for KNX technology to be recognized as an international standard.

At the end of 2004, the countries that are active members of CENELEC TC 205 submitted EN 50090 to the international standardization committee ISO/IEC.

In November 2006, the KNX protocol, including all transmission media (twisted pair, PL, RF and IP), was approved for publication as the international standard ISO/IEC 14543-3-x. KNX became the world's only international open standard for home systems and building management.

This helps to strengthen the confidence of users and designers worldwide in the use of intelligent control systems in residential buildings, as well as in buildings of various purpose.

Based on the already published standard, a corresponding guide has been developed for all those interested in home automation and building control.

The KNX Association hopes that the publication of the specifications by the ISO/IEC committee will make a significant contribution to the development of the intelligent building market. KNX offers its solutions and services to developers, manufacturers, installers and users worldwide.

Non-European manufacturers offering products based on ISO/IEC 14543-3-X gain access to the benefits of the developed European market for this specification, such as the opportunity to sell their KNX-certified products to an established customer base.

At the same time, manufacturers and installers outside Europe will contribute to the development of markets in their own countries, as they can offer a wide range of already developed application possibilities.

Membership in the KNX Association (Belgium) gives companies the opportunity to exchange know-how and licenses within the association, to use ETS (Engineering Tool Software) tools for their products that are independent of the manufacturer and type of product, and to participate in partnership projects and research and development programs.

The KNX Association is the founder and owner of the KNX technology – the only open standard worldwide for all applications in the field of building automation and home automation, from lighting control and blinds to security, heating, ventilation, cooling, monitoring, alarms, water supply, energy management, electricity meters and household appliances, as well as audio devices, etc.
KNX is the only standard in the world for home systems and building management with uniform commissioning tools (ETS) for all manufacturers and products, as well as a full range of different data transmission media (twisted pair, PL, RF and IP) and configuration types (for system, simple and automatic mode).

KNX technology is recognized as a European (CENELEC EN 50090 and CEN EN 13321-1) and an international standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3). It is based on 15 years of experience of the founders of KNX, the EIB, EHS and BatiBUS organizations.

Currently, there are more than 100 member companies and almost 7,000 groups of certified KNX products worldwide.

The KNX Association has already concluded partnership agreements with more than 21,000 installation companies in approximately 70 countries.
