The Bank of Russia puts into circulation modified banknotes in denominations of 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 rubles. While the appearance of the banknotes remains virtually unchanged, their security system, developed by specialists from the Goznak association on order from the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, has been significantly strengthened. Moreover, the emphasis is primarily on visual security features.

A hidden moire pattern has appeared on the front side of Russian banknotes (on all banknotes except the 10-ruble note, it is located in the ornamental strip to the left of the main image; on the 10-ruble note, it is around the image of the chapel). On the back side of the banknotes, five silver sections of the «window» metallized security thread are visible in reflected light (in transmitted light, it is a solid dark line).

In addition, laser microperforation is used for the first time in Russia on large denomination banknotes – 100, 500 and 1000 rubles: this method is used to create a digital image of the banknote denomination.

10-ruble modified banknote

The modified ten-ruble banknote is virtually identical in appearance to its predecessor, the 10-ruble banknote of 1997. The modified banknote is printed on tinted paper with a fawn tint. The paper mass contains chaotically arranged protective fibers of light green and red colors, as well as stepped fibers with alternating sections of red and blue colors. It would not be superfluous to recall the images on the banknote: on the front side is a view of the bridge across the Yenisei and a chapel in Krasnoyarsk (a 19th-century monument); on the back is a view of the dam of the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station.

One of the differences is the appearance of a 2-millimeter-wide metallized diving security thread in the banknote. On the back of the banknote, this thread comes to the surface in five visible sections.

Another difference is the appearance of a hidden moire pattern on the front side of the banknote, which is located around the image of the chapel. When viewed at a right angle, this pattern is a solid monochromatic stripe, and when viewed at an acute angle from the long side of the banknote, it is alternating colored stripes.

1. Multi-tone local watermark in the form of the banknote denomination.

2. Multi-tone local watermark: image of a chapel.

3. Mark for people with impaired vision. The text «Bank of Russia Ticket» and the mark for people with impaired vision have increased relief, perceived by touch.

4. Latent effect (kipp effect). When examining the banknote at an acute angle, the letters PP (Russian ruble) are visible on the patterned guilloche ribbon in the middle part. The hidden image, located on the ornamental ribbon, is revealed when examining the banknote at an acute angle in reflected light. By changing the angle of view of the banknote, but without changing the direction of gaze, you can notice how the light letters PP on a dark background become dark on a light background.

5. The serial number is printed on the left coupon in red paint.

6. Serial number, printed on the right coupon in dark green paint.

7. Metallized security thread 2 mm wide, with five visible areas on the surface — «windows», located on the back of the banknote.

The new banknote differs from the previous one by the presence of the following security elements:

8. Hidden moire pattern.

On the 10-ruble banknote: when viewed at an acute angle from the long side of the banknote, alternating colored stripes are visible around the chapel.
Using a magnifying glass, you can discern microtext on the back. Under the image of the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station is a positive microtext formed by the repeating number 10 in upright and oblique font. Under it is a negative microtext in the form of dark stripes with light repeating text «ЦБР10»

50-ruble modified banknote

The modified 50-ruble banknote is made on tinted paper with a light blue tint. The paper mass contains randomly arranged light green and red security fibers, as well as stepped fibers with alternating red and blue sections. The two-color security fibers appear purple, but when viewed through a magnifying glass, alternating red and blue sections are visible on them.

The front side of the banknote depicts a sculpture at the base of the Rostral Column, and the back side shows a general view of the Stock Exchange building and the Rostral Column on the Neva Embankment (St. Petersburg).

As for the fundamental differences of the modified banknote, firstly, it is the moire pattern. It is located on the front side in the ornamental strip to the left of the sculpture. When viewed at a right angle, a solid single-color stripe is visible, and when viewed at an acute angle, alternating colored stripes are visible.

The second fundamental difference is the appearance of a metallized diving security thread: in transmitted light it is a solid dark line, and in reflected light, five silver-colored sections appear on the back of the banknote.

The new banknote differs from the previous one by the presence of the following security elements:

7. A 2-millimeter-wide metallized security thread with five visible sections on the surface—“windows”—located on the back of the banknote.

8. Hidden moire pattern. When viewed at an acute angle, alternating colored stripes are visible on the long side of the banknote to the left of the engraving.

With the help of a magnifying glass, you can discern microtext on the back. At the top of the banknotes is a positive microtext formed by the repeating number 50 in upright and slanted font. Below it is a negative microtext in the form of dark stripes with light repeating text «ЦБР50».

When examining banknotes under ultraviolet radiation, the paper does not glow, red and light green protective fibers have a red and yellow-green glow, respectively, and on two-color protective fibers, red sections luminesce with red light. Fragments of the background image printed on the back of the banknotes with green paint have a green glow.

100-ruble modified banknote

The modified banknote is made on tinted paper of a light pink shade. The paper mass contains chaotically located light green and red security fibers, as well as stepped fibers with alternating sections of red and blue. The two-color security fibers look purple on the outside, but when viewed through a magnifying glass, alternating red and blue sections are visible on them.

Recall that the front side of the banknote depicts a quadriga on the portico of the State Academic Bolshoi Theater (Moscow), and the back side shows a general view of the Bolshoi Theater building.

Starting with this denomination, laser perforation appears for the first time in the modified banknote series — this method is used to apply a digital designation of the banknote’s denomination, visible when held up to the light. When viewed from the front side of the banknote, a direct image of the number “100” is read, and from the back side, a mirror image.

The hidden moire pattern (MVC effect) on the front side of the 100-ruble banknote is located to the left of the image of the quadriga.

There is also a metallized diving security thread: in transmitted light, it is a solid dark line, and in reflected light, five silver-colored areas are visible on the back side of the banknote.

2. Multi-tone local watermark: image of the Bolshoi Theatre. Watermarks are located on coupon fields: on the narrow one — the digital designation of the denomination, on the wide one — the image of the facade of the Bolshoi Theatre. When viewed against the light, areas of both darker and lighter colors are visible on the watermarks compared to the general background of the paper. On the watermark located on the wide coupon field, smooth transitions of tones from dark to light are clearly visible.

3. Mark for people with impaired vision. The text «Bank of Russia Ticket» and the mark for people with impaired vision have increased relief, which is perceived by touch.

8. Hidden moire pattern. When viewed at an acute angle, alternating colored stripes are visible on the long side of the banknote to the left of the engraving.

9. Microperforation—a digital designation of the banknote's denomination, readable from the front side.

With a magnifying glass, you can discern microtext on the back side. At the top of the banknotes is positive microtext formed by the repeating number 100. At the bottom of the banknotes is negative microtext in the form of dark stripes with light repeating text «ЦБР100»

500-ruble modified banknote

The modified 500-ruble banknote is printed on tinted paper of a light purple hue. The paper mass contains chaotically arranged protective fibers of light green and red colors, as well as stepped fibers with alternating areas of red and blue. The two-color protective fibers look purple on the outside, but when viewed through a magnifying glass, alternating red and blue areas are observed on them.

The front side of the banknote depicts a sculpture of Peter I with a view of the port of Arkhangelsk, and the back side shows a general view of the monastery on the Solovetsky Islands.

The 500-ruble banknote uses laser perforation — this method is used to apply the digital designation of the banknote's denomination, visible when held up to the light. When viewed from the front side of the banknote, the direct image of the number «500» is read, and from the back side, a mirror image.

It is also worth noting the hidden moire pattern — it is located to the left of the image of the sculpture of Peter I (the «action mechanism» is the same as on banknotes of other denominations).

Plus — the presence of a metallized diving security thread.

7. The bank emblem changes color from red-brown to golden-green when viewed from an angle.

The new banknote differs from the previous one by the presence of the following security elements:

8. A 2-millimeter-wide metallized security thread with five visible areas on the surface — “windows” — located on the back of the banknote.

9. Hidden moire pattern. When viewed from an acute angle, alternating colored stripes are visible on the long side of the banknote to the left of the image of the sculpture of Peter I.

10. Microperforation is a digital designation of the banknote's denomination, visible when held up to the light. When holding a banknote up to the light, the number 500 is visible on it, formed by micro-holes that look like bright dots. This feature is clearly visible even with a low-power light source. The paper in the area where the micro-holes are located should not feel rough to the touch.

1000-ruble modified banknote

The modified 1000-ruble banknote is printed on white paper. The paper mass contains randomly arranged light green and red security fibers, as well as stepped fibers with alternating red and blue sections. The two-color security fibers appear purple in appearance, but when viewed through a magnifying glass, alternating red and blue sections are visible on them.

The front side of the banknote depicts a sculpture of Prince Yaroslav the Wise (the city of Yaroslavl), and the back side shows a general view of the Church of St. John the Baptist and the bell tower in Yaroslavl.

One of the features of the modified banknote is that the coat of arms of the city of Yaroslavl is printed with color-changing paint (on the old-style banknote, such paint was used to print the emblem of the Bank of Russia). When the banknote is tilted, the color of the coat of arms of Yaroslavl changes from crimson to golden-green.

The digital designation of the banknote's denomination is applied using laser microperforation and is visible when held up to the light. When viewed from the front side of the banknote, a direct image of the number «1000» is read, and from the back side, a mirror image. On the front side of the banknote, to the left of the image of the sculpture of Yaroslav the Wise, there is a hidden moire pattern. As on banknotes of previous denominations, a metallized diving security thread was used in the production of the 1000-ruble banknote.
