Cisco announced Cisco EnergyWise, a breakthrough technology for Cisco Catalyst® switches that measures, monitors, and reduces the energy consumption of IP devices such as IP phones, mobile computers, and wireless access points. Cisco also announced new partnerships and the acquisition of Richards-Zeta Building Intelligence, Inc., a developer of intelligent middleware, to help manage energy consumption across a wide range of building-related systems, including lighting, elevators, air conditioning, and heating.
Cisco EnergyWise is designed to support Cisco's strategy to use networking technologies to reduce carbon emissions, reduce energy consumption, and improve the eco-friendliness of all business activities. Cisco EnergyWise is part of Cisco's broader technology roadmap to transform the entire information technology chain and make the network the primary means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the entire enterprise.
Cisco EnergyWise technology for improving the energy efficiency of information technology and life support systems in buildings will be deployed in three phases. In the first phase (the network control phase, February 2009), this technology will be integrated into Catalyst switches to manage the energy consumption of all IP devices, such as IP phones, video surveillance cameras and wireless access points. In the second phase (the IT control phase, summer 2009), industry support for Cisco EnergyWise is expected to expand and extend this technology to personal computers, mobile computers (laptops) and printers. In the third and final phase (the building control phase, early 2010), Cisco EnergyWise will control heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems, elevators, electronic badge control at the entrance, fire alarm sensors and security systems.
Cisco EnergyWise provides CIOs with real-time visibility into energy savings opportunities across the organization and at each location (on-premises, in a branch office, or in a data center). Beginning in February 2009, Cisco EnergyWise will be available free through a simple software update on all existing Catalyst switches and will be built into all new Catalyst switches.
Cisco is partnering with Schneider Electric for utility management, SolarWinds for network monitoring, and Verdiem for personal computer energy monitoring. The goal of these collaborations is to expand the EnergyWise platform so that it can manage energy across all IT and utility systems by early 2010. Additionally, as mentioned, Cisco has acquired intelligent middleware company Richards-Zeta to enable simple and cost-effective interoperability and integration of building infrastructure, IT applications, and Cisco EnergyWise technology.
The new Cisco Green Business Value Calculator helps customers estimate the cost and savings (including greenhouse gas emissions reductions) of deploying Cisco EnergyWise solutions and other green technologies, such as Cisco Unified Communications, Cisco TelePresenceTM, and Cisco WebExTM. Cisco has also added adaptive power management functionality to the Cisco Wireless Control System, enabling customers to save energy by powering down idle wireless systems during non-working hours.
«At Cisco, we believe that technology has the potential to change the way we think about the environment and energy,» said Judy Lin, senior vice president of Cisco's Ethernet Switching Business. «EnergyWise technology uniquely positions Cisco to provide customers with visibility into energy consumption across their networks, not just at the device level, but in the future at the network level, enabling them to optimize business operations across the enterprise.»
«Cisco EnergyWise technology has given us complete visibility across the entire company, and now we can conservatively reduce energy consumption across all of our commercial spaces by 15 to 20 percent, resulting in energy savings of 19 to 33 cents per square foot, or thousands of dollars per year,» said Jeff Ton, vice president of information technology at Lauth Property Group.
«We are the global energy management specialist, helping our customers use energy more efficiently,» said Schneider Electric CEO Jean-Pascal Tricoire. «Today, Schneider Electric delivers energy savings of up to 30 percent in residential, commercial and industrial buildings through energy monitoring and management. By using the network as a platform with Cisco EnergyWise technology, we will be able to further limit energy consumption and offer our customers an efficient, simple and reliable infrastructure.»
«The SURVEYOR solution has enabled Verdiem customers to reduce the environmental impact of their technology and save up to 60 percent of the energy consumed by personal computers. We look forward to signing the agreement to use Cisco EnergyWise, an enterprise energy management system that not only underscores the company’s strong social responsibility, but will also help customers improve productivity and meet their environmental obligations,» said Jeremy Jaech, CEO of Verdiem.
«SolarWinds delivers powerful, simple, and affordable network management solutions to thousands of IT organizations worldwide, — said Kenny Van Zant, chief product strategist at SolarWinds. — Within a year, the integration of Cisco EnergyWise and SolarWinds Orion Network Performance Monitor solutions will make it easier for network engineers to manage energy consumption along with other daily tasks»
