The building automation systems market in the USA.

The company «BCS Partners» recently published an analysis of the North American building automation systems (BAS) market («BCS/2006: The Building Control Systems Market (2005-2010).»).

This analysis revealed a number of important and perhaps surprising facts.

Leading BAS vendors are pushing digital control systems in conjunction with centralized monitoring and automation systems, but these systems represent just over 10% of total building automation spending by building owners.

The remaining costs are for control, measuring and actuator mechanisms, as well as design, installation, commissioning, calibration and maintenance of equipment and other related services.

In general, equipment costs account for about 25% of all building automation costs, and the remaining 75% are for various services.

Surprisingly, however, even small companies producing only systems for monitoring the operation of utility systems in buildings manage to successfully compete with industrial giants offering customers a full range of products and services.

The report «BCS/2006» analyzes the distribution system of equipment for monitoring utility systems in buildings and shows the relationships between component manufacturers, OEMs, distributors and installers of equipment.

The report also indicates the relative dollar turnover for each direction in the industry under consideration.

The market for building management products and services is highly dependent on, among other things, population size and growth.

People need utilities, and providing them requires systems to monitor and control the operation of utility systems.

According to the latest update (July 2003) provided by the Census Bureau, there are 112 metropolitan areas in the United States with populations greater than 500,000. More than a quarter of the U.S. BAS market is concentrated in the 10 largest metropolitan areas.

The growth rate of this market in some agglomerations reaches 10% per year, while in other agglomerations it is gradually decreasing, and this information is of significant interest to those companies that are engaged in expanding and optimizing their dealer networks.

Having been quite static in terms of technological changes in the past, the BAS industry is currently actively developing.

By implementing the latest technological developments in the field of data transmission and display, originally intended and made cost-effective for the industrial and IT markets, BAS companies are actively moving forward in the development and application of systems based on modern network technologies.

In addition, due to the desire of building owners to have greater flexibility in the installation and configuration of air temperature sensors, wireless air temperature sensors with built-in transmitters and their own power supplies, which have a service life of up to 5 years, have become widely used.

By 2010, this technology is expected to be used to monitor at least 10% of all premises.

Equally important, the growth in the use of room monitoring systems is expected to be more than 20% per year.

The rapid growth of this area will be further fueled by similar devices that are already appearing on the market that use only ambient light for their power.

Significant consolidation of the BAS market took place from 2002 to 2005, which resulted in the acquisition of popular brands in this market by larger corporate structures.

The building management systems market in North America reached $4 billion in 2005, having recovered from the severe recession of 2002-2003.

In 2005, global sales in this sector increased to almost $11 billion.

Although new building construction has resumed, the existing BAS market in the United States is based on existing buildings.

According to the latest data from the Department of Energy, 75% of non-residential space in existing buildings is still not equipped with energy management systems.

If the market is realistic BAS will only be able to cover a fraction of these areas, but the potential in this area is still enormous.
